I Need To Get Fit! No More Procrastinating!

get fit

Yes, I need to get fit.  I have a Duran Duran concert in July and class reunion in August.  More than likely I will be going to the DD concert with my friend Paula.  That means we will probably get backstage and I want to look good for my boys.

This would be my first class reunion.  I haven’t seen most of my classmates (outside of Facebook pics)  since the 80s.  I want to look great.

The first step to get fit is getting out! Now that the weather is finally getting better, I plan on doing more walking and maybe some jogging.  I also have dozens of fitness DVDs that have been collecting dust, because most of my workouts have been online.

Years ago I did a different DVD every day challenge.  It was called 30 Day No Repeat. You can see the first week’s schedule here. I’m going to be doing that again.  I will be doing the exact same schedule.

Get Fit

In my recent post I Didn’t Worry About Gaining Weight During My Vacation, I talked about how much walking we did during our vacation.  I experienced a lot of pain in my legs every day.  Recently I started taking Omega-3s to combat that pain.  I have read that Omega-3s are essential for my heart health, but they are also great for reducing inflammation and joint pain.

I need to get fit

One of my favorite fitness gurus PJ Wren also included Omega-3 as one of the best vitamins you can take.  Read her post here.

I’m taking flaxseed oil capsules, eating more fish (more sushi)  and adding flaxseed to my food.  I have less leg pain and I don’t get stiff after sitting for a while.  So, I will be keeping Omega-3s in my diet permanently.

The Groundhog was so wrong

This Weather Is Killing My Fitness Motivation

Can you believe it’s April already!  I know it doesn’t feel like it, but it is spring.  We had 6 inches of snow last week in Toronto.  Yes, I know other parts of North America are dealing with the same thing.  That groundhog was so wrong.  I’m not listening to him anymore.  Can I blame him for my lack of fitness motivation?!

This Weather Is Killing My Fitness Motivation
It’s springtime!

This weather is killing my fitness motivation! It’s hard for me to get motivated when the weather is like this, but before you know it, it will be hot and I’ll be regretting my procrastination.

Last week I started to get back on track with some Yoga.  It felt good to do a little something.  If I want to get more toned, I have to start weight training and cardio.  My favorite form of cardio is walking.  I did a lot of that on my vacation and I wrote about it last week.  The post is here.

I want to get outside more now.  My body is craving it.  I did look at the weather forecast for the next couple of weeks and it looks promising.

Fitness motivation

I’m drinking my protein shakes again.  I made a really delicious one with pears, peaches, strawberries and banana.  The protein powder I used is one of my favorites.  You can read a review of it here.  I also love using cashew milk in my smoothies.  It adds a creaminess to it without a lot of calories.  I reviewed one brand of cashew milk here.

I’m just taking it one day at a time.  I have a couple of events I want to look good for.  The first one is the Duran Duran concert in July.  The second one is my high school reunion in August.

Time’s a wastin’!  Let’s get moving!

Is the “spring” weather getting you down?! How are you staying motivated with your fitness routine?!  Please share in the comments section below!

Failure is an Option

I wrote this post ‘Failure is an Option’ last year on a blog and it was published in Midlife Boulevard. I remembered it because of something that happened to me recently.  As you know this is my Year of Yes.  I am saying yes to things that challenge me, make me fearful, but I know I should do.

I did that recently. I said yes to something I didn’t want to do, but I knew it would be good for my resume and I failed.  So I hope this article can help us all struggling with our goals right now.  Motivate us to continue on our path.  It’s there! We have to keep trying.  Delay doesn’t mean no.

“Failure is a stepping-stone to greatness.”-Oprah Winfrey

I don’t know when I subscribed to her email list, but I’ve been getting emails from Oprah every day for the past couple of weeks.  These emails contain some thoughts of the day and self improvement tips.  I have heard Oprah say many times to listen to the tiny whispers and that failure are God’s little whispers.

Failure Is A Prerequisite To Success

Life Coach Erica Diamond Editor-In-Chief of Women on the Fence was interviewed in an OWNShow video called Tiny Invisible Signs You Are On the Wrong Path. Here are some of her tips.  Listen to your instincts. They are the tiny whispers Oprah talks about. Use your gut along with the intellect. So many times people ignore that gut reaction when they shouldn’t. And my favorite, failure is a prerequisite to success. So many of the most successful people in the world have failed many times and that just makes them stronger and more determined.

“Failure is an option, fear is not.” -James Cameron

A second video that comes on immediately after the Tiny Invisible Signs Your On The Wrong Path is called Reasons People Keep Failing At Resolutions. Interviewed during this video are  TV Host Leeza Gibbons, Olympian Carmelita Jeter and Comedian Erin Darling. Each of them had some great tips for approaches to setting goals.

Writing them down month by month.

Visualize your success. Another way to say this is “Claim it!” Whenever I told my mother I wanted something, she would always say “Claim it!” Make it yours and it will happen.

Have fun and just let it go.  Don’t beat yourself up when something doesn’t go the way you wanted it to. I have trouble with this one.

Some tips on how to reach your goals are:

Take them week by week or day by day. Slow and steady wins the race.

Have small and realistic goals. Don’t try to do too much at one time. You will be overwhelmed and will then give up.

Be patient because sometimes it will take longer than you want to get to your goal.  Another one I have a problem with.

Failing isn’t permission to give up.

I’m so glad I watched these videos.  Accomplishing your goals is definitely a process.  I have to learn how not to beat myself up, be more patient and just let go and have fun. You can watch the videos here.

Do you believe that you have to fail to succeed? Do you believe failure is an option? What steps do you take in achieving your goals? Are any of them listed here? Please leave me a comment below.  I would love to here your story.

Change and Opportunity

2016 is still young, but I have a feeling this will be a great year!  I’m trying to keep a positive outlook and continue to remember to say yes when I feel like saying no to something that challenges me.

David Bowie died on January 10, 2016.  I have listened to his music and payed tribute to him on social media a lot in recent days.  I have been a fan since I was a child.  I loved his music, but most of all I loved his uniqueness and his creativity.  He didn’t care what anyone thought of him.  He never stayed the same.  He was always evolving. He was his own person and always thought outside the box.

I remember being so inspired by him after visiting the David Bowie Is exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and now his death has challenged me to do the same.  To say yes to my creativity.  To not care what others think of me.  To be open to change and opportunity.  To evolve and not be afraid.  To continue to think outside of the box.

I haven’t forgotten about working out and healthy eating.  I have to make a conscious effort to stop what I’m doing every single day to work out and have healthy meals.  I have an online part-time job, taking online classes and actively searching for work in social media marketing.  During the month of December I wasn’t eating healthy or working out.  On top of that I became more sedentary.  I noticed myself getting doughy. So, I work/study for a couple of hours and then work out.  I find myself not snacking during the day because I’m so busy, which is great.

I’m not really following a diet.  Trying to keep my calories between 1500-1800 calories a day.  I’m doing Fitness Blender workouts now.  I’m doing FB Booty and FB Abs now.  You can find out more about their plans here.

I’m also taking time out of the day to meditate.  I feel better and more confident when I do.

I want to start bringing you all a recipe of the week.  Foods that are full of flavor helps me to stay on track. I made a wonderful Slow Cooker Chicken Tikka yesterday.  The recipe is from Cooking Light.  You can find the recipe here.

I would like to end with one of my favorite songs from David Bowie’s new album “Blackstar.”

Reflect, Forgive, Begin, Commit

Reflect, Forgive, Begin, Commit

Reflect, Forgive, Begin, Commit

How did your first week of the Year of Yes go?! I was focused and got many things done.  I had a little voice in my head saying all week “You have to say yes to something that challenges you!” For awhile there wasn’t anything, but I did say yes to a couple of things.  First I want to talk about reflect, forgive, begin, commit.

I saw a Periscope with Siobhan Sudberry. She is the creator of the BeFree Project.  I signed up earlier this year with her Facebook group and have been sporadically participating.  One of my goals is to participate more. In this scope she talked about how to get out of a rut and how to make changes in our lives.  How to not begin 2015 by doing the same things in 2016 if they weren’t successful.  Find out more about BeFree Project here.

There are four tips to being successful in 2016.  The first tip is to reflect. Reflect on the what was successful in 2015 and what wasn’t successful.  What would you change?! What would you continue to do in 2016?! Did you meet your goals?!
That next step is to forgive.  This is a big goal for me.  I am very hard on myself.  I have start being more kind to myself and just because I didn’t accomplish my goals doesn’t mean I’m not worthy of the life I want.  Also, to forgive others. Don’t take anything negative into 2016!
Step three is to begin or start fresh.  Don’t wait, start your new life right now!  Don’t procrastinate or wait until a certain date.
Step four is commit to change.  Change is so difficult for me.  Right now I am trying to shift my mindset on a daily basis. I am also guilty of doing the same thing over and over.  I am opening myself to new ideas and getting out of my comfort zone.

Check out Siobhan’s scope here.

My homework for this week is to make a list of things I am afraid of and next to that fear I will write a positive statement.  The positive statement will be what could happen if I got out of my comfort zone and conquered that fear.

I said yes to a couple of things this week.   First, I signed up for Siobhan’s free Take Action Email Bootcamp.  It’s a 10 day course that will help me get out of my rut and take steps to acquire the life I desire.  Sign up for Siobhan’s course here.

Then I signed up for a free Squarespace course offered by Megan Minns.    I don’t know much about Squarespace, but I watched a couple of the tutorials and it looks like an easy way to create a website. You can sign up for the Squarespace course here.

Saying yes to these to courses was a great step for me.  They will help me with becoming the best I can be in my new career.

So are you ready to reflect, forgive, begin, commit?!

Gettin’ Lean In 2014 Update: Weeks 23 & 24

Ok I haven’t been very good with the updates. I’m sorry.  It’s a combination of lack of motivation, being super busy packing for Toronto, my ankle injury, oven and dishwasher dying and the kids getting out of school early due to the teachers’ strike.  Also my face has broken out into these little bumps. They have been a pain.  I’ve been trying all sorts of things the past two weeks. I may have found the solution.  I will write more about it next week, hopefully. Yes, it has been a couple of busy weeks!

I really haven’t stop trying to eat clean.  That’s always the plan, but eating every 2-3 hours some days goes right out the window.  If I’m busy I will forget to eat.  And sometimes if I remember to eat I’m not hungry. My workouts have changed.  Been doing more Yoga, Pilates and upper body workouts to try to stay off of the ankle as much as possible. I also started doing meditation, but now that the kids are out of school due to the teachers’ strike it has been difficult to get that in.

Workout schedule for week 25 is basically much like the last couple of weeks. Yoga, Pilates, walking and upper body training. One upper body workout I’ve been doing is 10 Minute Workout to Tighten Arm Jiggle.  This workout is no joke!

Please feel free to connect me with on, Pinterest, on Twitter as GFGKelly or Dancingvalentin, Facebook or on my blog. I will try to do better with the updates, but sometimes life happens;-)

Gettin’ Lean In 2014 Update: Week 22

Week 22…..Ugh well, I injured my foot and had a difficult time putting pressure on it. It’s the same foot that the refrigerator shelf fell on last year. So, I wasn’t able to complete all of my workouts.  Still attempting to eat clean most of the time, but I’m getting a bit discouraged and I need some motivation. I think I’m just ready for a change. I’m ready for our new adventure in Toronto.

So for week 23 I’ve decided that I will just do Pilates.  Try to stay off of my foot because on Monday of week 23 I tried to go for a jog, but my foot wasn’t having it.  This article 6 Smarter Ways to Train for Common Body Goals inspired me to get out and jog.  I want to tone my thighs.  The article says to do that I should do distance running. And for a toned belly the article says Pilates is the best. I also wanted to start this BodyRockTV 14 Day Legs Challenge, but it will have to wait until next week.

Workout schedule for week 23:
Tuesday-Saturday: Pilates (I’ll just choose various workouts from YouTube)

Recipe of the week comes from the Go Fit Gals, No Bake Chocolate Truffles! Great snack to get your chocolate fix and you don’t need the oven which is great for those hot summer days ahead!

Please feel free to connect me with on, Pinterest, on Twitter as GFGKelly or Dancingvalentin, Facebook or on my blog.
