Gettin’ Lean In 2013 Update: Fit For Fall Week One

Fall in Grant Park Chicago

Fall is in full swing! Just can’t get enough of this time of year.  Completed week one of the Go Fit Gals Fit For Fall Challenge.  I always enjoy the challenges because of the motivation, daily workouts and great recipe ideas. Didn’t win last week’s prize, but I’m aiming to win this week.  Last week the focus was on changing your mindset.  This week it’s on clean eating.  Why do we eat clean?  Why is it important to eat clean?

Here’s one of my favorite workouts from the Fit For Fall Challenge! Love doing HIIT workouts!

I’m doing well with working out.  I was sick a good portion of last week, but I still completed the Fit For Fall and Mamavation 2 Week Challenge workouts.  Eating clean isn’t much of a challenge anymore.  It’s pretty much second nature.  Just the challenge of staying away from the Pumpkin Spiced M&Ms.  Luckily I think they are only available in the States.  The last bag will be gone soon.  No more temptation.

I did a lot better with the clean eating this week.  I decided to return to the Go Fit Gals clean eating program.  It is less restrictive than the Dr. Oz Clean Eating Detox.  I think his detox is fine for a few days for me, but any longer than that I start to feel deprived.  I managed to go a couple of days without the Coke Zero.  The strange thing is that I haven’t had any coffee in over two weeks.  I usually start my day with two cups.  I don’t crave it like I used to.

I have had a bit of success conquering the dreaded muffin top.  I measured my waist and I’m down an inch and I’m down two inches off my lower abs.  So happy about this!  I will continue the Go Fit Gals clean eating program from the 6 -Week Shape Up Plan I did last year. Week 14 will be the last week of the Fitness Blender 8 Week Fat Loss Program. The following week will be a rest week and then the following week I will begin the new Fitness Blender plan.  You can find out more information about it here.  I’ve also signed up for the Go Fit Gals Short and Sweet Challenge that begins May 13, 2013.  If you sign up for the Fitness Blender plan or the Go Fit Gals program/challenge let me know!

Last week was great!  I got on the scale this morning and cannot believe I’m down a couple of pounds. Last week was ‘me week.’ My husband took the kids to the States to visit relatives.  I stayed behind for some much needed rest.  Even though I missed them I still was able to enjoy the ‘me time.’

A few days last week I followed the Dr. Oz Clean Eating Detox.  It was easy to follow.  The first day I was ok until the evening and then I became tired and had a really bad headache.  The second and third days were fantastic.  I had a ton of energy and felt really relaxed.  Those two days I also did a detox yoga routine.  Loved it and I’m not a yoga person.  I decided that I would try to do it two times a week.  The weather in Vancouver has been fantastic too!  I don’t think I have ever seen this many rainless, sunny days here.  I went for long walks on those days.  Which helped with getting to 10,000 steps a day.  Because the kids haven’t been in school for two weeks, getting to 10,000 steps a day has been a challenge.  I usually get a lot of my steps walking them to and from school.

I went off the detox on Easter Sunday, but I’m back on track today. I plan to stay on the detox until Mother’s Day.  Tried on the skinny jeans today and there’s still a muffin top, but a little less of it.  I will continue the Fitness Blender 8 Week Fat Loss Plan.  Really tough workouts every day!  I love it!  Can’t wait to sign up for the next one in late April.

Clean Eating My Main Focus

It’s officially four months until my summer in Chicago. I have declared my abs Public Enemy Number 1!  *cue the Dragnet music* My abs are like a gang and the leader of the gang is called Muffin Top.  I tried on my size 6 skinny jeans a few days ago and I could get them on and even button them, but I had the dreaded muffin top.  My focus for the next four months is all over fat loss specifically the abs.

I was on Twitter and I saw this tweet from Tom Holland “@tomhfit Getting Sculpted Abs By Summer .”  I watched the video and RTed it with thanks.  He tweeted this back to me “@dancingvalentin You’re welcome! Remember that it’s mostly good eating – ab exercises a distant second!”  This gave me an “aha moment.”  I knew clean eating played a part in getting great abs, but I didn’t realize that it was THE most important part.  I will now concentrate on clean eating at every meal, every single day.  I will be following the Dr. Oz Clean Eating Detox Program.  This program is no joke.  There’s no dairy, coffee, sugar, eggs…most of my favorite things.  I’m starting this program March 28, 2013.  I need to do some grocery shopping before I start.

I’m starting the last four weeks of the Fitness Blender 8 Week Fat Loss Program.  I haven’t gotten bored.  I still feel challenged.  I am seeing small changes in my body.  I think once I get serious about the clean eating I will definitely see more changes.  This will be the first week in a long time I’m only doing one workout program.  It’s kind of refreshing.

Gettin’ Lean In 2013 Update: Week 9

This last week was tough.  Thought about my friend that passed away a lot.  She was buried on Friday.  My parents went to the funeral. So glad they were able to attend.  I continued with Fitness Blender’s 8 Week Fat Loss Program, the Mamavation 2 Week Challenge and Renewed Fitness’ Summer Body Series Program.  I love being active every day and when I’m done with my workouts I’m so proud of myself.  It hasn’t been that difficult getting all the workouts in.  The Mamavation and Renewed Fitness workouts are quick and usually don’t take over 35 minutes to complete.  The Fitness Blender workouts vary in time, but are usually about an hour.

Week 9 was the last week for the Summer Body Series.  I believe there will be another program in the near future.  I made a big step towards getting artificial sweeteners out of my diet.  I bought some coconut sugar yesterday.  I was skeptical about it, but if tastes really good in my coffee and is only 16 calories per teaspoon. Dr. Oz talked about coconut sugar on his show check it out here.  The Go Fit Gals also recommend that I try natural sweeteners like raw honey, pure maple syrup, and banana.  I will incorporate those into my diet as well.   Here’s what the Go Fit Gals really think of artificial sweeteners.

Week 10 I will continue with the Mamavation 2 Week Challenge and Fitness Blender’s 8 Week Fat Loss Program.  I’m feeling healthy, strong and looking forward to the future!

Gettin’ Lean In 2013 Update: Week 8

 I’m ready for Spring!

Last week was a pretty stressful week.  My daughter was ill and not eating.  She’s already tiny and so with her not eating I was constantly worried.  Then I found out one of my childhood friends died suddenly.  I’ve known her since 1st grade. It’s hard to believe she’s gone.  She died almost a year to the day another childhood friend died.

My daughter is doing a lot better.  She’s eating and back to her old
self.  My friend’s funeral is Friday the 15th. I wish I could be there.
My parents are going because they have always said that the kids I
attended grade school with are like family.  They are like the brothers
and sisters I never had.  The majority of us started 1st grade together
and stayed together through high school.

Even though it was stressful I made sure to still take care of me.  Working out helped me to deal with the sadness, frustration and anxiety.  I completed the 2nd week of the Fitness Blender 8 Week Fat Loss Program.  Still loving it.  The workouts are challenging, but fun. I got caught up with the Renewed Fitness Summer Body Series.  Last week was week 5 for that series. If you don’t have a lot of time to workout this is for you.  The workouts are 10 minutes.  Renisha the instructor asks for us to do the workout twice.  So you could do all 20 minutes at once or 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening. The workouts aren’t complicated and can be for beginners to advanced. Check out the week 5 workout.

This week I’m also doing the Mamavation 2 Week Challenge.  The workouts are quick and I do them in the morning with the Summer Body Series Workout.  Then in the afternoon I do the Fitness Blender workout.  I’m getting back to eating clean and getting rid of the processed food.  And another thing I decided to do is stop using artificial sweeteners. Not only do I want to look good for BlogHer13, my former classmates and I have decided that we are getting together this summer for a reunion.  We decided that life is too short and we need to see each other face to face and not just chat with each other on Facebook.  Because that’s not enough.

6 -Week Shape Up Final Week Update

 6-Week Shape Up

Six weeks have flown by.  I learned a lot on this program.  I learned about clean eating and cooking.  Now pumpkin, avocado and greek yogurt are on my grocery list every week.  I learned that you don’t have to kill yourself by working out for 2 plus hours a day to see results. I learned that it’s not just about a number on the scale.

I did get on the scale this morning and I have lost another 2 pounds.  So, my final stats are 6 pounds and 2 inches lost.  I also notice that my arms and inner thighs are a lot firmer.  Those are two of my major problem areas. I’m a lot stronger and can lift heavier dumbbells. I want to thank PJ and Risse for the opportunity to try the program.  I have enjoyed every minute of it.  I will continue to follow the Go Fit Gals because what they are doing is challenging, fun and it works.

6-Week Shape Up Week 5 Update

The weeks have flown by!  I cannot believe I just finished week 5.  I did complete the entire week. Don’t really have to think hard about what to do.  It comes very naturally to me now. I measured myself and I’ve lost an inch off my waist. Getting stronger every week. Five pound dumbbells seem so light to me now.  Next week is the final week.  Can’t wait to get started.  I will miss doing this challenge.  Still have a few more weeks on the Little Black Dress Challenge.  So the Go Fit Gals aren’t getting rid of me that easily.

6-Week Shape Up Update Week 4

miraculous recovery from illness Stock Photo - 6855375
Feeling better and ready for week 5!  Bring it on!

I didn’t finish week 4 because I got sick on Friday.  Basically over the weekend I rested, drank a lot of tea and cleaned out my DVR.  My body was feeling the burn from week 4 workouts, but I think it was happy to have a bit of rest.  I did celebrate my birthday on Saturday with breakfast in bed (pancakes) from my son and husband.  And I did have a piece of birthday cake. Ok, I’m done with confession time;-)

Feeling a lot better! Week 5 has been awesome so far!  I also making one of my favorite Go Fit Gals recipes, the Slow-Cooker Beef Stew.  I am back on track with the workouts and eating clean. I’m happy to report that I lost an inch off my hips.  My skinny jeans fit better than when I bought them a few years ago.

6-Week Shape Up Week 3 Update

Fresh appetizing apple and brightly colored dumbbells tied with a measuring tape. Slight reflection, white background, focus on the apple Stock Photo - 2406801

This plan is like second nature to me right now. Everything is clicking. I do the workouts and eat clean. Feeling great! I notice that when I go grocery shopping I’m on the perimeter of the store most of the time. The produce section has become my favorite area of the store. One thing I have to work on is not stressing about the calories. I still log on to MyFitnessPal.com every day to log in my meals and workouts. I get a little upset if I go over my calorie goal for the day. But eating clean is not about counting calories. It’s about eating healthy. The Go Fit Gals Don’t Sweat It Mondays addressed this issue this week.

The Foodie in me has been reborn. I really enjoy the recipes and experimenting with new foods. A few weeks ago I wouldn’t have looked twice at an avocado. Now I make sure it’s at the top of my grocery list. Last week I made some easy raw banana pudding and guacamole with it.

I’m also getting stronger every day. The first two weeks on this plan I used 5-8 pound dumbbells. The third week I used 8-15 pound dumbbells. Love the way I look in my clothes. Feeling more confident than ever.

Moving on to the 4th week. A new week of workouts and also this week the Go Fit Gals Little Black Dress Challenge begins. I’m doing that one too. Cannot wait to get started.
